Upskilling & Reskilling for a Green Revolution

November 18, 2021

For over 2 centuries, we have developed and perfected the linear model of manufacturing: Extract resources from nature — refine and manufacture goods — consume and throw away…

This is the model of consumption we have been training the workforce for, for generations. However, climate changes, increasingly frequent environmental disasters, and the global pollution crisis is forcing us to stop this destructive behaviour. We need to take action and change now — today, not tomorrow.

The problem is that the educational system is just now beginning to implement sustainability into the curriculum. This process is slow, and businesses cannot wait on future graduates with a green profile to enter the workforce. They need the skills and knowledge for their environmental transformation now. Moreover; what about their existing workforce who did not receive training or education on sustainability during their studies?

The Circular Economy Alliance is accumulating an extensive Body of Knowledge to help organisations through their green transition. The programmes include in-depth training, certifications, and educational resources for upskilling and reskilling the existing workforce for the sustainable needs of their employers. The goal is to enable businesses, as well as private and public institutions, to achieve economic growth, while reducing their pollution.

Why Circular Economy?

Circular economy is predicated on exactly this principle — making sustainable manufacturing and business practices economically feasible. The field enables manufacturing, construction, retail, and many other industries to build business  models without relying on refining natural resources.

To be effective, Circular Economy has to be adopted at all levels of the economy. All stakeholders, including but not limited to employees, management, consumers, suppliers, contractors, financial institutions, and investors, need to commit to the principles of circularity. That begins with equipping professionals with the skills to implement sustainable practices.

The workforce needs to be continuously re-skilled and up-skilled to adapt to the inevitable disruption of the labour market. New skills and competences will increasingly be required to support the upcoming technological advancements of the labor market.

Online up-qualification programmes are available

The Circular Alliance training and certification programmes, empower the workforce with access to a lifelong learning system. They will receive the ongoing training they need to close the gaps between their existing skills and the skills required by industries increasingly focusing on sustainability.

Who can benefit from the training?

Regardless of background, educational level and existing knowledge of sustainability practices, the Circular Economy Alliance Body of Knowledge provides valuable insight. The resources and practical guidelines are taught with a business oriented focus. They provide strategies anyone can use to implement circular principles in their own workplace. The aim is to develop a learning culture, where employees are ready to acquire new skills as needed by industry changes.

For companies to maintain economic competitiveness, they will need to maintain a skilled and motivated workforce. A workforce able to provide solutions to the circular economy challenges that face organisations in the near future.

Do you want to learn how other companies and organisations are up-skilling and re-skilling their workforce to implement circular economy? Then get access to the Circular Economy Body of Knowledge today.

The linear economic model may have served us well, arguably leading to incredible productivity and the modern way of life; since 1990 alone, over one billion people have been lifted out of extreme poverty and child mortality rates have been cut by more than half1. However, its negative externalities and impacts are reaching the tipping point of the planetary boundaries2. The planet can no longer sustain the ‘take-make-waste’ model of production and consumption.
